One city that truly connects you with India’s rich religious and spiritual heritage is the holy city of Varanasi. As a highlight of the Maharajas Express Indian Panorama Tour, Varanasi is a top destination in India, attracting countless visitors from around the globe each year.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast onboard the luxurious Maharajas Express, we journey towards the mesmerizing city of Varanasi, arriving at the local train station by noon.

Varanasi: A City with Many Names and Many Facts

Varanasi, also known as Banaras or Kashi, is located in Uttar Pradesh on the banks of the sacred River Ganga. According to Hindu beliefs, a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges cleanses a person of their sins and breaks the cycle of birth and death, offering spiritual enlightenment. Recognized as the Oldest Living City in the world and the Religious Capital of India, Varanasi is a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Jains.

The city is famous for its over 80 Ghats, or riverfront steps, where devotees perform various religious ceremonies. Some of the most well-known Ghats include Manikarnika Ghat, Assi Ghat, Munshi Ghat, Kedar Ghat, and Ram Ghat. The daily Ganga Aarti at dusk is an unforgettable and humbling experience, showcasing the city’s deep spiritual essence.

Beyond its religious significance, Varanasi is a hub for education, culture, trade, arts, crafts, dance, and music. It is home to the prestigious Banaras Hindu University, the largest and most reputed university in Asia.

Sarnath: Our first stop is Sarnath, a renowned Buddhist spiritual site located just 10 km from Varanasi. It is believed that nearly 2,500 years ago, Lord Buddha gave his first sermon at the Deer Park in Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. Walking through this ancient sacred site, you’ll experience a profound sense of peace and tranquility.

Silk Weaving Centre: Varanasi is also famous for its thriving silk weaving industry. We’ll visit a silk weaving center to see how the beautiful Benarasi silk is made. These exquisite pieces are often worn with pride on special occasions like weddings and are passed down through generations.

River Ganga Boat Ride: As evening approaches, Dasawamedha Ghat fills with devotees and tourists eager to witness one of Varanasi’s most spiritual and heartwarming rituals, the Ganga Aarti. Towards the end of the Aarti, priests release floating lamps into the river as a prayer offering. Pilgrims follow suit, and soon, the river is aglow with twinkling lamps. During our boat ride on the Ganga River, we’ll have the perfect view of this magnificent ceremony, making it a truly memorable experience.

Brij Rama Palace: Located on the banks of the River Ganga at Darbanga Ghat, close to Varanasi’s vibrant Dasawamedha Ghat, is the beautiful Brij Rama Palace.
